Brooks RCMP continue their investigation following an assault that occurred in the parking lot of the JBS Meat Plant last Friday afternoon.

Police say they were called to the facility shortly after 3 p.m. April 25 after a victim said they had been assaulted by two of four suspects driving a sedan that confronted the victim and exchanged words.

The victim was treated for minor injuries and police say the investigation is ongoing.

Computer fraud

RCMP in Brooks have provided residents a list of tips to help increase online protection following the report of a computer fraud that occurred last Thursday.

Police say they received a call from a victim who had their computer hacked by a scammer pretending to work for Microsoft and lost a “significant amount of money.”

Officers say they are investigating the scam as the victim has been given active instructions by the scammers to deposit money into a bitcoin machine to fix the issue.

Additionally RCMP have provided a public statement with tips to help secure data and protect against online fraud.

Police say it’s important to say no and hang up immediately if a caller pressures you to buy something or send money and suggest checking the legitimacy of any business by checking their official websites and contacting them directly before sending money to anyone.

“Scammers often create a sense of urgency to manipulate victims,” reads the public statement.

Additionally police say in Canada no legitimate prize requires a fee or tax to claim, and also be suspicious of any prize you have won in a contest you did not enter.
