newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com On Monday evening Medicine Hat College will host a public gathering to honour lives lost during the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+) held annually on May 5 since 2010. During the national day of remembrance and activism red dresses are draped in trees, hanging from windows, pinned to jackets and worn as earrings. Additionally supporters are often seen with red hands painted across their faces to honour loved ones. The ceremony will begin outside the campus main entrance at 6 p.m. on May 5 and will include an Indigenous prayer, guest speakers and honour song as well as a 1 km awareness walk around the campus. “Join us to honour impacted families and educate ourselves about the purpose of this day and our role as community members,” reads a promotional ad. Those planning to attend the event are encouraged to wear red to show solidarity and raise awareness. Additionally, organizers are encouraging participants to bring their own hand drums to use during the walk if they own one. The ceremony is present in partnership with the Miywasin Friendship Centre, Firekeepers Women’s Society as well as South Country Co-op. 8
