Shipping containers that were made up as market stalls at Towne Square but removed last fall will be used as market stalls, a concession booth and storage by local businesses and community groups.

This week, the News reported that Alexandra Middle School had secured two of the painted pods, while the City of Medicine Hat released other locations and provided financial details of the transactions.

Three will be used at the Homestead Market, near Gershaw Drive, as an outdoor marketplace.

Two acquired by the Medicine Hat Public School Division will be used to house athletic equipment.

The Park Meadows Community Association will use one to store the group’s equipment and decorations from their annual Christmas light display.

One sea-can will be converted into a concession stand at Liquid Nightclub. And the Medicine Hat Speed Skating Club will use one to store large mats used for meets.

The city announced last fall that the market pods would be removed from Towne Square across from city hall as they had become expensive to maintain and clean after overnight camping.

Total proceeds from the sales was $9,200, which will be counted against the $20,000 cost to remove the pods to a city storage yard and disconnect electrical set-ups at the site.
