Alberta may not have the rolling Hollywood Hills, but the province has been gaining momentum as an exceptional filming destination within the industry.

Last week the UCP said its Budget 2025 will invest $8 million in the Alberta Media Fund to support the province’s creative sectors that generate more than $35 million in spending within the province annually since 2020.

“From catering to construction supplies, accommodations, local rentals, transportation and more, film and television production strengthens the economy and creates jobs,” the province said in a statement.

The government estimates the film and TV sector has created more than 450 jobs over the last five years.

“Our film and television industry is not only a creative force but also a major contributor to Alberta’s economy,” said Jobs Minister Matt Jones.

“Our government’s investment into our cultural industries is putting Alberta on centre stage,” said Tanya Fir, minister of arts, culture and status of women. “By further supporting film, television, music and publishing, we are driving economic growth while sharing our culture and stories.”

Additionally, the government says its Film and Television Tax Credit allows production companies to more easily expand into rural areas. It estimates these productions are expected to spend approximately $1.5 billion in the province across a range of industries.

“Through programs like the Film and Television Tax Credit, we are continually working to respond to industry needs, making sure Alberta remains a top destination for film and television productions,” said Jones.

The tax credit allows production companies spending at least $499,999 to apply for a 22 per cent tax credit. If additional conditions are met, including at least 70 per cent of the total labour costs made up of Alberta wages, a production company can apply for a 30 per cent tax credit.

Budget 2025 will commit $235 million to the Film and Television Tax Credit program over the next three years.
