This year the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education has nominated first-year social and language arts teacher Leilani Leighton for the Edwin Parr Teacher Award for new teachers who have demonstrated excellence in the Teaching Quality Standard.
Leighton, who teaches at St. Mary’s School, has a deep connection rooted with the school where she once attended and was an active student athlete.
Additionally, during her time at college, Leighton coached volleyball, badminton and soccer at St. Mary’s.
“It’s just a full-circle moment,” explains Leighton. “In middle school, I was taught by so many amazing teachers, and now being back and learning for them in different ways and they’re just so supportive in everything and anything I need. They’re always there for me and it’s great to have a team that backs you up like that.”
Leighton was informed of her nomination in March and will be recognized at an upcoming public board meeting scheduled for May 13. She says the nomination was unexpected but reflects the support she has received from her mentors and coworkers.
“I was so surprised. Honestly, there’s so many incredible first-year teachers in my district right now, and I was just super grateful that I have such a great team that nominated me.”
Vice-principal Alexa Batsel says Leighton has demonstrated outstanding teaching abilities as a new teacher who works to foster a structured and inclusive learning environment within her classroom.
“She seamlessly integrates strong classroom management with meaningful student relationships, ensuring all learners feel valued and supported,” says Batsel. “Her calm and firm approach sets high expectations while maintaining a warm and respectful atmosphere.
“Leilani’s meticulous planning, clear instructional strategies and commitment to continuous improvement exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional educator.”
Every year the Alberta School Boards Association honours six first-year teachers for the Edwin Parr Teacher Award with one winner from each of the six zones across the province.
Nominees must have completed a minimum of 100 full-time equivalent days of teaching service from the beginning of the current school year.
Leighton will join other Zone 6 nominees who will be acknowledged at a banquet in Taber in May. Zone winners will be honoured at the annual fall conference in Edmonton.
