CF Industries and two Japanese industrial giants will build a new US$4-billion, low-carbon ammonia plant in Louisiana, the Illinois-based fertilizer company announced Tuesday.

The Blue Point complex would produce 1.4-million tonnes of ammonia per year, with resulting carbon dioxide captured and sequestered in a nearby network.

Construction could begin next year toward a commissioning target in 2029, CF said.

“Our joint venture represents tangible progress towards building a reliable and affordable low-carbon ammonia value chain to meet what we expect to be robust global demand for low-carbon ammonia for both traditional and new applications,” said Tony Will, CF’s president and CEO.

The facility would be owned 40 per cent by CF, while other shares of partners said to be 35 per cent to JERA and 25 per cent to Mitsui. Production will be allotted on the same percentages.

JERA is the largest utility company in Japan, supplying 30 per cent of the country’s electricity needs. It has signalled a move to hydrogen combustion, which would be potentially fuelled through separating ammonia transported from overseas.

Mitsui is a global materials trading and logistics company and infrastructure investor with offices in 62 countries.

At 1.4 million tonne capacity, the facility would be larger than CF Industries’ Medicine Hat complex, which is the largest in Canada at 1.23-million tonne annual capacity.
