High school students from Medicine Hat, Dunmore and Brooks are getting set to compete in the South East Regional Skills Canada Competition, held in the Hat on Friday.

Students will compete in nine event areas that include automobile technology, baking, cabinet making, carpentry, culinary arts, hairstyling (junior and intermediate), video production and welding.

During a Skills Canada competition, students are tasked on a project designed to test knowledge and techniques they’ve learned in the classroom and showcase their drive for excellence.

“By taking their skills out of the traditional classroom setting, students gain an appreciation for where their skills can take them and are encouraged to reach for the personal best,” reads a release.

In past years carpentry students have been tasked to build a lemonade stand and baking students were asked to complete a variety of themed dishes.

“The Regional Skills Canada competition not only provides a platform for Alberta’s students to showcase their hard work and passion, but also gives them the chance to connect with industry professionals,” says Chris Browton, executive director with Skills Canada Alberta.

Students who find success at Friday’s regional competition will be asked to compete in the annual provincial Skills Canada Competition in Edmonton this May.

A majority of events will be held at Medicine Hat College, however some culinary and hairstyling events will be held at Monsignor McCoy and Crescent Heights High Schools.
