Three Medicine Hat College business and marketing students earned second place at the annual 2025 Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition held in Fort McMurray in March.

The annual competition brings together students from post-secondary institutions across the province to tackle a real-world business challenge by developing a strategic solution and presenting their recommendations to a panel of business leaders.

During the three-day competition that ran March 13-15, students were asked to develop a marketing strategy to increase ridership at the Fort McMurray Airport.

The three-member team representing MHC included Malkai Bartsch, university transfer commerce student, Siya Gulatia, second-year business and administration and marketing major and Mason Hoimyr, first-year accounting.

Bartsch says the experience provided her a “more holistic understanding” of real-work problems, like case studies.

“I feel this experience has allowed me to perform better under pressure, while as a potential employee,” said Bartsch. “I bring the same value, along with being able to think outside of the box and providing solutions that may have been overlooked.”

The three students, members of the MCH Case Club, earned $2,500 in prize money.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students to work in teams, apply classroom teachings and put it into practice,” said Miranda Davies, business instructor and faculty mentor for the Case Club. “Their fear of presenting dismisses, and in this team’s case, they saw that with commitment and dedication they could earn a winning spot.”

The prize money was shared between the students and the Case Club.
