The makeup of a commission to look at Alberta’s election riding boundaries has been finalized – including a former provincial party leader and a Lethbridge area lawyer – and will begin its work in the near future, according to a release.

The Electoral Boundaries Commission is tasked every two terms of provincial government to examine population levels in ridings and potentially rebalance representation by altering boundaries to maintain a relatively similar number of voters.

The five-person panel is typically chaired by a judge – Medicine Hat King’s Bench Justice Dallas Miller was named March 19 – but the government and opposition caucuses also nominate two members each.

They are, from the opposition New Democrats Greg Clark (the former leader of the Alberta Party) and former Sylvain Lake mayor Susan Sampson, and from the governing United Conservatives, John D. Evans and Julian Martin.

Brooks-raised Evans is the Lethbridge-based board chair of regional law firm Stringham, LLP.

Martin, of Sherwood Park, is a retired history professor with the University of Alberta and former member of the Surface Rights Board.

The commission is required to submit a draft report within seven months of its formation and then a final reports five months after that.

Regional consultations are expected to be announced soon, according to release.
