newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The Alberta Teachers Association says conversations have been productive between stakeholders as teachers return to the bargaining table seeking a new four-year collective agreement. The ATA’s Central Table Bargaining Committee and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association met during a two-day period beginning on March 19 to work together toward an agreement for educators. “The Central Table Bargaining Committee remains committed to advocating for teachers’ needs and improving conditions for both educators and students across Alberta,” reads a press release from March 25. Monday, the ATA said the mediator’s recommendation has been presented to teachers and the association will be holding a town hall and information session for teachers province-wide in the coming month. All bargaining details will remain embargoed until after a ratification vote on the agreement, held May 2-5. Public information is expected to be released May 6. “An information embargo has been in place during the mediation process to support open and productive discussions and to enable the negotiators the opportunity to brief and take advice from their respective representatives.” ATA members can access complete and accurate information on the agreement by signing into the “Members Only” section of the ATA’s website. The ATA says it will not be providing any additional information until after the ratification vote. In June, 2022, members of the ATA voted to ratify its 2020-2024 collective agreement to include a 1.25 per cent wage increase in 2022, followed by a 2 per cent increase in 2023. The ratification also included the replacement of the Health Spending Account with the Health Spending Account/Wellness Spending Account that is available for all eligible teachers. 11
