Tonight a volunteer group that gets seniors out of their nursing homes and on bicycle rides is hosting a recruitment information session at the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce.

Cycling Without Age Medicine Hat is hosting a 30-minute session to learn about the volunteer opportunity that connects seniors with their communities by riding a bike.

The session begins tonight at 6:30 p.m. and will cover what’s involved in becoming a volunteer “pilot” and some of the experiences you can expect while volunteering. The session will also cover the training provided to bicycle pilots.

In particular the volunteer group is seeking pilots for special three-wheeled electric bikes called Trishaws that have two passenger seats in the front and are propelled by a volunteer who sits in the back.

“The bike pilot can easily chat with the passengers,” reads a press release.

In 2024 the Medicine Hat chapter of Cycling Without Age offered 90 bike rides by 30 certified volunteer pilots from four local facilities, including Cypress View Foundation, the Medicine Hat Care community, the Wellington Retirement Home and Meadow Ridge Senior Living.

If you are unable to attend tonight’s session you can also contact CWAmedhat@gmail.com for more information on how to become a volunteer pilot.
