The Medicine Hat Public School Division has announced registration dates for science, math, english and social studies classes available this summer.

Summer classes provide students an opportunity to participate in the core subject courses that have small class sizes and dedicated teachers who are able to provide more individual attention.

Summer classes are also an opportunity for adults and international students to upgrade courses to meet post-secondary requirements.

Students are able to participate in lessons in person at school or at home through Google Meet, however students are encouraged to come to class on test days.

Virtual classes will have mandatory daily attendance required. The division says due to the compressed nature of the summer course a class period of two hours is equivalent to approximately one week of regular school classes.

MHPSD requests students who know they will miss some of their classes to not register for summer courses, as students will be withdrawn from classes after three absences, however students are able to contact their teachers and arrange to catch up outside of class if absent from class due to illness.

Online registration will open May 12 with a deadline to register students in junior high courses by July 3 and a deadline to register in high school courses on June 23.

High school courses begin July 2 and run until July 31. Classes will run 8-11:15 a.m. and/or 11:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Junior high courses begin July 17 and wrap up July 25. Classes will run from 10 a.m. to noon, and or 12:30- 2:30 p.m.

“These courses come with a heavy workload, including daily homework assignments and less time for completion,” says the school division.

Science courses available include Science 10, Chemistry 20 and 30, Biology 20 and 30 and Physics 20 and 30. Math courses include Math 7 to 9, Math 10C, Math 20-1, Math 20-2, Math 30-1 and Math 30-2.

English courses include Language Arts 7 to 9, English 10-1, 10-2, English 20-1 and 20-1 and English 30-1 and 30-2. Social courses include Social 10-1 and 10-2, Social 20-1 and 20-2 and Social 30-1 and 30-2.

Diploma exams for Grade 12 programs will be held in the first half of August.

Details on how to register and costs are available on the division’s website under the “Division News” tab.
