@MedicineHatNews Former Taber-area MLA Broyce Jacobs has died, the Alberta legislature was informed Wednesday. Jacobs served two terms as the MLA in the provincial riding of Cardston-Taber-Warner, having won elections in 2001 and 2008. Speaker Nathan Cooper told the legislature that Jacobs passed away on March 14 at the age of 84. Jacobs was also serving as a councillor with Cardston County where he was previously reeve. Bus route proposed A company that operates long-distance bus routes in Canada is examining another attempt to run between Calgary and Regina. Officials with Rider Express discussed the matter with city officials in Brooks in late February, according to minutes of that council’s meetings. The company currently operates routes from Calgary to Edmonton and Vancouver, and from Edmonton to Regina and then Winnipeg, as well as between Toronto and Ottawa. It has twice attempted a Calgary to Regina route, officials told council members, including once through Lethbridge. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss potential drop off and pick up locations in that city. No action was taken by the city. SaskPower spends on steel Saskatchewan’s Crown power provider has pre-ordered steel for its three-year construction program from a Regina steel mill. SaskPower, two construction companies and Evraz Steel will have signed a contract involving 10,000 tonnes of steel that will be used to build transmission towers through 2028. “By prioritizing the purchasing of local steel for SaskPower and SaskEnergy infrastructure projects, we are helping to keep over 400 hardworking Saskatchewan people on the job right here in Regina,” said Crown Investments Corporation Minister Jeremy Harrison in a March 18 release. Gas provider, SaskEnergy, has a current contract for 100 kilometres of pipe and other steel needed for ongoing power plant construction. 17
