A local judge will head the upcoming review of potential electoral boundary changes in Alberta.
King’s Bench Justice Dallas K. Miller was named chair of the commission that convenes every two provincial elections to rebalance or even add ridings.
It recognizes population changes, can move boundaries to keep relatively even numbers and considers other factors such as geography and commonality, among others.
The appointment was announced in the new list of Orders in Council from the Alberta cabinet.
A judge typically heads the five-person committee that also includes two members nominated by the governing party and two by the official opposition. MLAs cannot serve on the committee.
The process in 2016 resulted in changes to Medicine Hat and Cypress-Medicine Hat ridings. A final recommendation moved the dividing line within Medicine Hat city limits and created the ridings of Brooks-Medicine Hat and Cypress Medicine Hat.
At the same time, the County of Forty Mile was also moved to the Taber-Warner riding from Cypress, and Brooks changed from Brooks-Strathmore.
That recommendation was put in practice at the time of the 2019 election.
The population of Alberta has grown by about 800,000 people since 2016.
