The South Eastern Alberta Archaeological Society will host a presentation Wednesday on how to better understand Métis culture.

“Our understanding of the Indigenous peoples of the northern Plains has been constructed through the lens of people trained in European-derived methods,” says SEAAS. “As a result, studies of the Métis have focused upon their being a mixed people of European and Indigenous heritage. Such racialized understandings have neglected individual and national understandings of identity.”

Dr. Kisha Supernant, director of the Institute of Prairie and Indigenous Archaeology, will present on a new theoretical approach she has been developing based upon the Cree concepts of interrelatedness and visiting.

Supernant will draw upon her work examining Métis wintering sites to illustrate these ideas which helps us to better understand that past.

All are welcome to attend the presentation, which will be preceded by a short business meeting at 7 p.m. in the Crowfoot Room at Medicine Hat College.
