Medicine Hat police say they have received a number of reports from residents who have received a text message advising that they owe money for outstanding parking tickets.

The text message appears as an “Alberta Violation Notice,” and links a fraudulent site that appears to look like an Alberta government payment portal.

In the message, recipients are told that rectifying this violation prevents the suspension of your licence, and immediate payment is required through a “self-handling” portal.

“Please be advised that this is a scam,” reads a public warning that advises residents to delete any message they may receive. “Do not click the payment link and do not provide your credit card information.”

Throughout March, the Medicine Hat Police Service has joined other law enforcement agencies across the country to promote Fraud Prevention Month in Canada, and have been actively sharing information to help residents identify and prevent becoming a victim of fraud.
