newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Redcliff RCMP say despite an overall decrease in property crimes in the area, police have investigated three residential break and enters and five motor vehicle thefts since the beginning of 2025. On Tuesday, RCMP released a press statement reminding residents to take proactive steps to protect their homes and property from break-ins and reduce the risk of becoming a target for thieves. “Redcliff RCMP would like to remind the public of these security tips in order to deter those seeking to commit these crimes,” said St. Sgt. Michael Courty. Redcliff and Bow Island RCMP say it’s important to secure all entry points to your home or vehicles by making sure all doors and windows are locked. “Install high-quality deadbolts and reinforce door frames to make forced entry more difficult,” reads the statement. “Consider security bars or pin locks for sliding doors and basement windows.” Police also recommend keeping outdoor areas well lit by using motion-activated lighting, and make sure shrubs and trees near doors and windows are trimmed to eliminate hiding spaces. Never keep valuables, including cash or electronics, in sight from windows, and use visible security signs or stickers, even if you don’t have a security system installed. Valuables should also be removed from vehicles. “If you’re away, use timers for lights and electronics to make it look like someone is home.” Police also say it’s important to keep garage doors closed and locked and secure any tools or ladders that may be used by a criminal to break into your home. When possible, police recommended home owners should instal a security system, cameras or a video doorbell to monitor activity on your property. Spare keys should be hidden in uncommon locations. “Store spare keys in a secure location – not under a doormat or flowerpot.” 14
