Crews have filled 110 pot holes per day on average this month after snow and ice receded in late February, according to city roadwork officials, who also report street sweeping on major routes is underway.
The number of divots on the roadway is about “on par” with a typical year in Medicine Hat, city managers told a council committee on Thursday.
“We do have some challenges as they get washed out again with a freeze and thaw cycle, and we often have to return to same locations to perform repairs,” said Pat Bohan, the managing director of the development and infrastructure division.
Municipal works crews begin repair work each spring when asphalt supply becomes available and when weather conditions allow.
Highway light replacement
Scheduled meetings between city transportation planners and Alberta Transportation officials ahead of the summer repair and construction season took place Friday.
Bohan said the province plans to begin replacing lights along Highways Nos. 1 and 3 inside city limits on March 10 .
Initial phase will encompass areas south of the Gershaw Drive Interchange to city limits as well as areas from Redcliff to Saamis Drive on the TransCanada.
The work is expected to include the Kin Coulee dip to east city limits and the entire TransCanada north of the South Saskatchewan River.
Street sweeping
Cleaning up the accumulated gravel and sand put down on city’s major routes over the winter has begun in some locations, while the general city wide sweeping program will begin in April.
Night sweeping on medians, boulevards and bridges will start April 6, then to school zones during Easter break from April 21-25.
Residential area street sweeping will begin on May 5 in the downtown area, then advance as zones are completed.
