Brooks man arrested after kidnapping and sexual assaulting woman

Solomon Weldemichael from Brooks has been charged with both kidnapping and sexual assault after allegedly taking a women and holding her against her will.

Police say in the early morning on March 2, a woman was approached by the 39-year-old accused, who offered her a ride home. After repeatedly declining his advances, police say the woman eventually accepted the ride, however once inside the vehicle, Weldemichael made unwanted sexual advances toward her.

Additionally, reports claim, instead of following the woman’s directions, Weldemichael drove onto the Trans-Canada Highway. Police say the victim made several attempts to convince him to stop, eventually trying physical force to let her out.

Weldemichael allegedly ignored her pleas and continued driving on the highway before turning into a residential area at a high rate of speed.

The victim was later picked up by family members, who contacted police. Police say they located Weldemichael’s vehicle a short time later, leading to his arrest. Weldemichael was held for a bail hearing and released with conditions; he is set to appear before courts on March 18.
