The city’s power distribution department has been approved to replace a portion of power line that rings the city’s east side, but will need to win further approval at hearings this spring.

The Alberta Utilities Commission issued a permit on Feb. 21 for the city to upgrade MH-60L line – which spans 4.3 kilometres along from the Brier Park substation to the NE Crescent Heights along Rotary Centennial Way and part of Parkview Drive.

That is an initial portion of plan to double line capacity carrying all the way to South Ridge along Medicine Hat’s eastern boundary. Further portions through eastern Crescent Heights, the community of Parkview and Cypress County are still being considered.

A group of residents have applied to formally oppose a “preferred route” that would extend south along 11th Avenue to 20th Street, while an alternate would carry the line on new right-of-way along Parkview Drive. A hearing to consider arguments will be held in June.

The AUC states the MH-60L line upgrade, from 69-kiloVolt capacity to 137-kV along existing right-of-way, will cost about $5.1 million and should be completed by the end of 2029.
