Methanex donated $25,000 to Medicine Hat College this week to support the expansion of its steamfitter/pipefitter program, calling it a critical area of trades education that fills the growing demand for skilled professionals.

Methanex officials say MHC offers high-quality education and training that prepares students for careers in the energy, construction and manufacturing industries.

“Skilled trades professionals are essential to our operation,” said Brad Apking, plant manager. “We are pleased to support the college in its efforts to grow trades education and help students succeed, particularly in the high-demand areas of steamfitting and pipefitting.”

The college says collaborations between itself and local industries strengthen its trade programs and better allows them to ensure students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the rapidly changing workforce.

“We are incredibly grateful for Methanex’s continued partnership and investment in the future of our students and our community,” said Nancy Brown, MHC’s vice-president academic and provost. “Their support is a testament to their belief in the power of education to drive economic and social development.”

Additionally, part of the funding will also support the Indigenous student council with initiatives focused on increasing student success, fostering a more inclusive environment and help provide access to additional resources.

“This donation also reflects our commitment to supporting Indigenous students and ensuring they have the opportunities and resources to succeed,” adds Apking.
