Today a “mighty group” of more than 1,000 educators will gather at Medicine Hat College to participate in a two-day teachers convention.

The 2025 Southeastern Alberta Teachers’ Convention runs throughout today and Friday, featuring more than 100 workshops and seminars, as well as host guest speakers involved with the growth of the province’s teaching profession.

Today, Carla Stern will host an hour-and-a-half long workshop that will help teachers reduce disruptions and foster a positive learning environment in the classroom.

Stern is a registered provisional psychologist and “is well equipped with practical tools to support students struggling with emotion regulation and behaviour in the classroom.”

As well today, Cater Cox, an outdoor environment science teacher, will use LEGO to demonstrate how the entire Bio 20 unit of photosynthesis and cellular respiration can be taught with a hands-on approach.

The convention wraps up at 2 p.m. Friday following another full day of workshops and sessions, including ‘Five critical math teaching concepts,’ ‘Making sky science memorable and effective’ and ‘Move over cigarettes: vapes and nicotine pouches are hooking our youth.’

The University of Lethbridge will also welcome more than 2,000 educators as it hosts the 2025 South Western Alberta Teachers Convention, beginning today.

Today, CFL legend Michael “Pinball” Clemons will share his passion toward empowering youth through education and the work done through the Pinball Foundation.

On Friday, mindset coach Jessica Janzen will provide tools and strategies for teachers to regain control and insert joy into their demanding schedules.

As well Friday, Andrew Buckley host a session delving into the world of storytelling that will empower teachers to inspire students when “penning their own creations.”

Buckley is an experienced writer, podcaster and creator.

The conference in Lethbridge is expected to wrap up around 1 p.m. Friday.

All provincial teacher conventions this week are organized by teachers who volunteer on convention association boards and seek to improve overall education across the province.
