Rob Pape, the well-known face behind the Tongue on the Post Folk Music Festival and PorchFest, has recently been diagnosed with facet osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease.

Facet osteoarthritis means cartilage is breaking down in the facet joints and can cause localized pain, stiffness and reduced range of motion. Degenerative disc disease affects the discs between the vertebrae and causes chronic low back pain that may also include pain in the buttocks, thighs and lower legs.

A GoFundMe has been created by Pape’ sibling, Shawn Proulx, to raise funds to help Pape’s recovery following a successful surgery that was performed Feb. 13.

Pape’s conditions have made daily activities increasingly painful and his ability to work has been significantly hindered.

“Simple tasks have become major struggles, and the financial burden of managing his health has only added to the stress,” says Proulx on GoFundMe.

So far more than $2,800 has been raised through the online campaign. The funds will help Pape pay for medical expenses, including specialist consultations, diagnostic tests and prescription medication.

Pape will also require physical therapy and rehabilitation to help manage pain and regain mobility while preventing further deterioration.

Money will also help purchase any assistive medical devices including braces, canes or other equipment to assist Pape maintain his independence as well as supplement lost income incurred from time away from duties.

Pape currently serves as the executive and artistic director of the Medicine Hat Folk Music Club, and is CEO of RoadWorn Productions and Management. Pape was also a judge at the 2023 Canadian Folk Music Festival Awards.

“Rob has significantly shaped our local music scene,” says Proulx while describing Pape’s local accomplishments over 20 years, including founding Tongue on the Post Festival and PorchFest. “Both of which have brought numerous talented musicians to Medicine Hat and created unforgettable experiences for our community.”

The online fundraiser is seeking a goal of $10,000.

“If you’re unable to contribute financially, please help us by sharing this page with your friends, family and community,” adds Proulx. “We’re deeply grateful for your help and for walking alongside Rob during this difficult chapter of his life.”

To find the online fundraiser head over to GoFundMe.com and search for ‘Rob Pape’ or ‘A Champion of Music & Community facing a health battle.”
