During a chilly Family Day in Medicine Hat, the Big Marble Go Centre welcomed residents to enjoy several free activities, including the opportunity to do some swimming, enjoy a skate, or participate in some games.

This year, the annual event attracted more than 1,300 attendees who were able to enjoy a variety of free activities for all ages, including yard games, Nerf wars, an inflatable alley full of bouncy castles, slides and obstacle courses.

Big Marble Farms, which sponsors the annual event, had staff on site to showcase the company’s greenhouse operations and show children how cucumbers are packaged.

Staff at Big Marble Go Centre say it’s one of the busiest days throughout the year and they enjoy opening the facility to the entire community for free to reduce any barriers families may have.

“We’re very happy to see that people are utilizing this kind of event,” says Rebecca Hirsch, event co-ordinator. “We know finances can be quite tough sometimes, we’re very happy to have Big Marble Farms as a sponsor for these types of events, to allow it to be free for the community and to really see people come out and enjoy the spaces that we do have to offer.”

Away from electronics, families spend quality time together. Throughout the day children could be seen holding hands with their parents while enjoying a skate together, with other families splashing around in the pool. Toddlers ran wild with excitement throughout the game zone and climbed over inflatable castle walls.

“Personally, it’s so great to always see some people coming in, getting away from the cold and leaving with a smile,” said Hirsch. “I think it’s a big thing that recreation can do that for many different people. Depending on your skill or age level, you can find something for everyone.”

The Kiwanis Club also held several Family Day activities in Police Point Park, including an opportunity to build a wildlife kit, bird feeder, or wren or robin shelf.

Residents also gathered together around a large outdoor fire for a hot dog roast and hot chocolate.

Monday, the YMCA also held a variety of free activities including crafts, bouncy castles and a family stretch. The facility also opened its rock wall and held a photo contest for a chance to win a free annual family membership.
