newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Medicine Hat College is getting prepared to host its third annual Round Dance, a traditional Blackfoot ceremony that promotes healing, strength and connection, at the campus gymnasium on March 1. The college has partnered with the Firekeepers Women’s Society, Miywasin Friendship Centre and the Sammis Employment & Training Association, and the event will be led by emcee Tony Delaney and guided by David “Monster” Spotted Eagle as the Stickman. The annual Round Dance provides the community an opportunity to learn about aspects of Indigenous culture in an immersive way, and join hands to dance as a community. “For some of our community members, this is an opportunity to learn about their own culture and history, while connecting with those who share similar backgrounds,” said Nicki Eastly, student services specialist. “We encourage all of our community members to attend the ceremony with an open mind and experience this traditional way of knowing and being.” Women are encouraged to wear long skirts to the events to align with tradition, however attendees are welcome to wear what they feel most comfortable to dance in. There will be contests for best ribbon skirt and an owl dance will be held throughout the evening. “It’s a privilege to work closely with community organizations, Elders and knowledge keepers to provide opportunities to learn about Indigenous culture in Medicine Hat,” said Jennifer Kerslake, director of community engagement. “Taking part in events such as our annual Round Dance helps bring our community together, and we are proud to be a part of it.” The Round Dance begins at 6 p.m. in the campus gymnasium on March 1. The first 12 singers and drummers at the event will receive an honorarium. 9
