While they’ve promised no ivories will be stolen, the performers behind Piano Heist promise nothing about hearts as they hit the Esplanade this coming Monday.
In a one-part musical performance and one-part comedy, performers Nico Rhodes and Patrick Courtin will be proving to Medicine Hat audiences that piano is still cool, as they take audiences through every kind of music they can imagine.
“You can certainly expect the unexpected. Any musical style, any era, any instrument you could imagine two keyboard players playing,” said Rhodes. “It’s great. We always take the music seriously, and we don’t take ourselves all that seriously.”
The show will contain a little something for everyone, continued Courtin, from classical music all the way to Queen and Elton John, performed often with a twist to keep audiences on their toes. They even dance, though it was noted by Rhodes that referring to it as dancing might be generous.
“If you could imagine Bohemian Rhapsody played as a giant four-hand piano concerto, or if you could imagine Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin, played in a Motown funk style, if those kinds of things appeal to you, you’re gonna have a good time,” said Courtin.
Neither artist has ever performed in Medicine Hat before, but they are excited to get to know the community better as they make their way throughout Alberta for this leg of their tour.
Both Canadian performers themselves, Courtin says they have enjoyed the first half of their tour so far, and look forward to bringing their art to the stage in the Gas City, promising both a mix of music that most people will know and love, as well as some more obscure pieces to broaden their repertoire.
“People can expect, you know, some friendship, perhaps a betrayal. You never know. But there’s, there’s a lot of ups and downs. It’s hard to sort of pin down,” said Rhodes. “But really, we’re holding true to that sense of just two guys on stage, bringing as much happiness and joy and absurdity to the audience as possible. If we’re looking out and people aren’t grinning, then we know we’re doing something wrong.”
Limited tickets are still available through the Esplanade for the performance, which begins Monday evening at 7:30 p.m.
