Veiner Centre to host free mental health check-in; extends fitness centre hours

The Unison at Veiner Centre has announced it will be extending hours of operation at the Strathcona Centre workout room beginning on Feb. 10.

Anyone with FitPlus Membership can now access the workout room from 4-7 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening, after normal operation hours.

Starting Monday, Feb. 10 the Strathcona Centre will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, and will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

The Strathcona Centre is also open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mental health check-in

This month the Veiner Centre’s free Talk to a Councillor session runs for two hours on Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The free mental health check-in and chat with Ben can be helpful to help gain perspective on an ongoing problem.

“Taking the time to address mental health can lead to improved overall well-being and a more balanced life,” reads a promotional ad for the active aging course. “Whether it’s stress, anxiety, or just needing someone to talk to, reaching out for support is a proactive step towards a healthier mindset.”

Planning ahead

Later this month the Veiner Centre will host a light-hearted event to help aging adults plan for the future and discover benefits and programs that you may be eligible for.

The Senior Safety Series workshop is titled ”Get your Ducks in a Row Before it all Goes South” and will run for three hours on Feb. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featuring guest speakers from Extended Family Services, Service Canada and Cameron J Kemp Law Office.

The workshop will highlight benefits, programs and aging strategies, and will include complimentary snacks and beverages as well as door prizes.

The workshop is free for both members and non-members, however registration is required. Call 403-529-8307, or stop by the reception desk to register.

Building Resiliency

Near the end of the month the Veiner Centre is hosting an hour-and-a-half-long workshop that showcases techniques used to build mental and emotional resilience.

The Life Long Learning: Building Resilience workshop is planned from 1-2:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 and will showcase methods to adapt to adversity and manage stress with guidance from experts.

The workshop will also focus on building a foundation of self confidence and inner strength.

“You’ll gain insights to thrive in the face of life’s ups and downs,” reads a promotional ad.
