Mounties in Saskatchewan say they have seen a marked increase in highway fatalities to start 2025.

Officers responded to eight fatal collisions that resulted in 11 deaths from Jan. 1-29. That compares to two crashes and three lives lost in the first month of 2024.

“These numbers are extremely concerning to see,” says Supt. Grant St. Germaine, head of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. “We have had 11 people die on roads in Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction the first month of 2025 – think of how many people are impacted by these tragedies.”

On Monday, a 48-year-old man from Dinsmore, Sask, (north of Lake Diefenbaker) was declared dead after a single-vehicle rollover on the Trans-Canada near Moose Jaw.

The same day, three people were killed in a head-on collision of two SUVs near Melfort. Other fatal incidents have been reported this month at Kelvington, Meadowlake and Biggar. Two separate fatal crashes occurred near Warman on the same day.

“We’ve all heard basic driving safety tips hundreds of times,” St. Germaine says. “I may sound like a broken record, but I’ll keep repeating myself. Please remember the basics, drive to road conditions, obey speed limits, never drive while distracted or impaired by alcohol or drugs and always wear your seatbelt, because choosing to wear one can make the difference between life and death in a collision.”
