The Medicine Hat Fire Service will mark its 125th anniversary this year with a charity gala, several open houses and hosting a regional “firefit” competition event this spring.

City council’s public services committee heard Monday that a number of other initiatives are planned to highlight organized firefighting that began in Medicine Hat in 1900.

“It’s a significant event,” said fire chief Chad Eakins. “It’s important for us to open our doors and share what we do with the community.”

Open houses and demonstrations will be held in June and the fall at Stations 1 and 2. A gala will be held at Co-op Place on Oct. 21, and longer-term programming on the service’s history is planned at the Esplanade.

The service will host a “Fire Fit” competition, where departments test training against others, on May 31 and June 1 at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Grounds.

More information is expected to be released Tuesday.

SeaCan proposals

City administrators have received seven expressions of interest from groups in the community about repurposing market-stall shipping containers that were removed from Towne Square, city public services director James Hutter told committee on Monday.

The process has only been open for two weeks, he said, adding the largest determining factors in a decision will be community benefit and “financial recovery” on behalf of the city.
