Northland Power has an agreement to sell power from the Jurassic Solar + Battery facility, but has applied to delay hooking up the project near Dinosaur Provincial Park to the provincial grid until the end of 2025.

The Canadian-based global energy firm applied Wednesday to the Alberta Utilities Commission to extend a construction deadline due to alterations and delays in acquiring components to complete a 45-metre line from an onsite substation to the AltaLink transmission system.

Northland says work on the line could begin next October and be completed in late December when battery storage would begin operations. Full commercial operations would commence April 1, 2026 for battery transmission and Sept. 1 that year for production from the array.

The 1,200-acre project west of Jenner lays mostly in Special Areas No. 2 with several quarter-sections in Cypress County.

This fall, Northland announced that it has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement contract with the Alberta schools purchasing consortium, a body that provides group buying advantages for school districts.

The 220-megawatt project, coupled the 160-megawatt-hours of battery capacity, was developed by Alberta-based Greengate Power and sold with other projects to Northland in late 2022.

It was originally approved by the AUC in October 2023.
