MEDICINE HAT NEWS

Last year Medicine Hat Police reported an increase in phone scams, especially those targeting older residents like the ‘Grandparent Scam.’ Next month the Unison at Veiner Centre is getting ready to team up with Reality Bytes Inc. to host an hour-long scam prevention presentation to help older adults protect themselves from fraud.

Reality Bytes Inc. is an IT business management company with three locations in the province in Calgary, Drumheller and Medicine Hat. Its technical professionals will be on-hand to provide a presentation aimed at providing useful knowledge to identify and prevent fraud and scams.

“A recent survey revealed that in 2023, 78 per cent of adults aged 65 and older encouraged a fraud attempt,” states a promotional ad for the workshop. “Scammers operate year-round, making it essential to understand how to protect yourself and your finances.”

The session will also discuss the topic of romance scams that are also becoming more prevalent as well as providing tips to keep personal information secured.

The scam prevention presentation will be held between 1 to 2 p.m. in the Craftroom and registration is required. Questions can be answered by calling 403-529-8307.

Drop-in coffee

On Wednesday the Veiner Center kicked off a new program to encourage coffee drinkers to cozy up and connect over a cup of joe.

The Coffee Group meets every Wednesday for an hour beginning at 9 a.m. at the Bistro and offers “a friendly atmosphere for members and guests to connect, share stories, and engage in enjoyable conversations.”

The weekly drop-in event is open to all members of the community aged 50 and over. Questions can be answered by calling 587-770-1420

Glammy Grammy Models

For those who have always wanted to walk down the runway but never had the chance, this March the Veiner Centre is bringing back its ‘Glammy Grammy Models’ program for anyone over the age of 50.

Participants will learn how to “elevate your style with advice on sportswear, casual outfits and evening wear,” by learning three runway techniques.

The four-week long program will focus on how to build a wardrobe and “glam” it up to show off an individual’s unique style.

Participants will end the program by walking the runway in a fashion show. The first session begins March 18 and registration is required by stopping by the reception desk or calling 403-529-8307.
