First responders will face off as part of annual sledge hockey showcase, the Larry Godin Classic

Local first responders will hit the ice Saturday to promote the sport of sledge hockey and support the Medicine Hat Adaptive Sports and Recreation organization, during the annual Larry Godin Classic.

Puck drop between the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire & Emergency Services is at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Big Marble Go Centre. First responders will be joined by members of the junior Hounds to round out the roster.

Game admission is free and there will be a cash and credit raffle with more than $7,000 in prizes. Funds raised will support the non-profit organization, which promotes and hosts inclusive sports and recreational activities in the city.

The Larry Godin Classic will see teams from the Calgary Sledge Hockey Association, Regina Sledge Hockey and Kindersley Sledge Hockey taking on local teams.

Play starts Friday at 5 p.m running until 9 p.m, starting back up on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. running until 12:45 p.m. to break for the police versus fire game. The games pick up at 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. The final day of action, Sunday, starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 2:45 p.m.

The games Friday and Saturday are split between Big Marble and the Hockey Hounds arena, while all games Sunday will be held at the Big Marble.

Semi-truck fire

Brooks RCMP and County of Newell’s Fire Department responded to a semi-truck fire in the eastbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway near Range Road 155 on Jan. 10.

Firefighters extinguished the fire that was smoking heavily while RCMP managed traffic that had reduced visibility due to smoke.

An investigation revealed the fire originated from the rear passenger side of the semi-truck due to faulty brakes.
