Unionized construction workers earned big raises in collective bargaining talks at the end of 2025, according to the latest summary of collective bargaining released by the Alberta Jobs ministry, while local government employees move contracts forward.
Municipal workers in Red Deer will receive a nine per cent wage increase over three years, while firefighters in Edmonton also won raises totalling 10.3 per cent over six years.
More than 1,300 members of the International Association of Firefighters, Local No. 209, agreed in December to a new contract that only updates one that was seven years out of date, and the new deal has already expired.
In Red Deer, 1,080 civic workers represented by Canadian Union of Public Employees No. 417 will receive three per cent annual increases from 2024 through 2026 in a deal settled last October.
Other settlements of interest include large wage increases for members of the Boilermakers, Local 146.
A three-year pact with Foremost Universal sees the trades workers receive an initial seven per cent raise, followed by five per cent over the final two years of a three-year deal.
At Advance Tank Centres, unionized workers will receive a nine per cent pay through mid 2027.
Carpenters Union, Local 2010, will also receive consecutive five per cent annual pay increases at Brock Canada but zero in the third year of a new three-year contract.
Among large construction sector settlements, 1,300 workers at Ledcor who are members fo the Christian Labour Association of Canada received a 5.6 per cent raise when the contract was settled last February, and wages will be reopening annually in 2025 and early 2026.
Similarly, carpenters and labourers in the CANA Services Employees Association received initial raises of 6.2 and 5.9 per cent, respectively, with a final year’s increase to be determined.
Gas plant workers at the Canlin Energy Harlan Robb complex will also see increases of 12 per cent by the end of 2025. They are represented by Unifor Local No. 508A.
Unifor 4050 officials negotiated a 10 per cent increase for waste collection drivers employed by GFL Environmental in Fort McMurray. That deal ends in October 2027. That union also signed a new contract for GFL drivers in Saskatoon and Northern Saskatchewan in the fall.
