newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Candidates planning to run for a school board trustee position during the next civic election in October can find online nomination packages on the city’s website. Candidates can only run for trustee at one school board, not both the Medicine Hat Public School Division and Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education. Candidates must also be at least 18 years of age on nomination day and a Canadian citizen, and must be a resident of the local jurisdiction for six consecutive months before nomination day, which is Sept. 22. Trustees set goals for student achievement and well-being and also set priorities for the school division based on available resources. They create policy to guide school staff and evaluate the impacts of existing policies, making adjustments where necessary. The role often requires a significant time commitment that includes attending monthly board meetings and serving on a variety of committees that also meet at additional times. Trustees are also expected to attend school council meetings. A full list of eligibility requirements as well as a digital nomination package can be found on the city’s website. All candidates must submit their Notice of Intent and Nomination Forms to the City Clerk’s officers by noon on Sept. 22. 8
