@@CollinGallant The lead-up to the 2025 city election has officially begun, though few potential candidates were out of the gate when the nomination period opened Thursday morning. Only Calvin Isaac Maltin, the owner of Issac’s Barbershop on S. Railway Street, stated in a social media post on New Year’s Day that he would run for mayor. The News has scheduled interview time early next week. Mayor Linnsie Clark told the News in late December she will consider seeking a second term once the results of a provincial audit into council procedures are released, likely in the spring or early summer. Earlier this year, Coun. Ramona Robins told the media she plans on resigning shortly before the next election to embark on a long-panned year-long work sabbatical. She is a senior manager with Alberta Justice. Other councillors haven’t made definitive statements about their intentions in the election that will take place Oct. 20. The 2021 election involved 32 candidates for eight councillor positions and five for mayor – the most since an all-time record of 36 aldermanic candidates ran in 2001. That vote three years ago resulted in major council turnover of seats, with new council members winning seven out of nine positions. The set election day in municipalities and school divisions across Alberta is Oct. 20. The election period, during which candidates can register at anytime to begin fundraising and advertising, began Jan. 1. The deadline to register is Sept. 22, which is considered nomination day.
