Filmmaker Luke Fandrich won acclaim and awards for his documentary “Your Cinema Needs You” detailing the history of the Monarch Theatre in Medicine Hat and efforts by local Rotary Clubs to transform the historic theatre into a community hub.

After local showings, the film from the local visual artist and filmmaker toured the international festival circuit.

Last year’s top newsmaker was regional agriculture advocate Nichole Neubauer who earned recognition for spearheading ag education programs, earning notable support from provincial government and eventually an honorary doctorate from Medicine Hat College last summer.

Some other top candidates who made headline news in the last 12 months:

– Bull rider William Barrows, of Foremost, took a last-minute invite to the Canadian Finals Rodeo and turned it into a CFR title in October.

– Mayor Linnsie Clark lost most of her powers and half her salary after a council censured her for a breach of council’s code of conduct in March, but Clark won a reversal of most conditions after requesting a Court of King’s Bench review of the matter;

– Hat-born author Mark Sakamoto hosted the national Giller Prize book award ceremony in the fall;

– Medicine Hat’s MLA, Premier Danielle Smith, continued her government’s push for greater provincial autonomy as the Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA entered her third year leading the province;

– Hat-raised MacKenzie Porter was named female artist of the year at the Canadian Country Music Awards in September.
