In a short online video titled “Audrey’s Story: How Veiner Vintage Transport Reduces Senior Isolation” that was recently published to the Unison for Generations +50 YouTube channel, Audrey shares her experience using the initiative that provides transportation to seniors.
This year the Veiner Vintage Transport Program has provided approximately 1,300 rides to seniors in Medicine Hat and surrounding rural areas ensuring they have a ride to medical appointments, grocery shopping as well as social activities and community events to allow seniors to stay connected to the community and avoid isolation.
In the short video, Audrey explains she has been utilizing the transportation service for more than three years and shares her appreciation for the volunteer service that allows her to visit her friends at the Veiner Centre.
“I like it and I enjoy it and I have lots of friends here, we just have a ball,” says Audrey. “And the meals are delicious.”
The service works by providing door-to-door assisted transportation services and are able to offer a sliding scale subsidy.
This means the service is able to return rides for $5 for people whose annual income is less than $25,000 and $10 per return ride for people making more than $25,000 but less than $35,000 annually.
The service is run by volunteers and is able to provide transportation to all counties within Forty Miles and Cypress.
The online video can be found on the Unison for Generations +50 YouTube page and appointments can be booked by calling 403-525-8657.
