SaskPower says its charge to recover the federal carbon levy on gas- and coal-fired electricity sold in the province will rise by 2.9 per cent on Jan. 1.

That will add about $26 to the average residential bill and $75 for farm customers over the course of the year, bringing the total cost of carbon tax on power bills to $107 and $314, respectively, the Crown corporation stated on Dec. 11.

The federal carbon levy is scheduled to increase from $80 per tonne to $95 on April 1, the cost of which is applied on power bills in Saskatchewan through a special rate rider since 2019.

Alberta’s electricity sector is covered by an equivalency agreement with Ottawa to charge a provincial levy on high emission sectors, and those costs are blended into and recovered from the cost of the commodity.
