Clarification of Cypress County’s tax position among Alberta counties

– A measure used by the News recently to describe Cypress County’s taxation planning was incorrect, though the overall impression provides an accurate view of the issue.

An article in the Sat., Dec. 14 edition of the News stated Cypress County’s tax plan called for the municipality’s tax rates to rise to the “80th percentile” from one of the lowest in rural Alberta.

The target is actually the 20th percentile, which translates to 20 per cent lower and 80 per cent higher. The effect is that four out of five other Alberta counties have higher than local rates.

– An application by a group of Hatters wanting to stop the city”s purchase of the Saamis Solar Park had more signatories that originally stated by the News.

A second page of Medicine Hat Utility Ratepayers Association members brings the total names on a Alberta Utilities Commission submission to 51, rather than the figure of 38 originally reported in Dec. 10 report.

The two lists denote those who feel affected generally as residents of the city, as well as those who live within several kilometres of the north-end industrial site.
