Medicine Hat’s chief Crown prosecutor has been appointed to become a provincial court justice in the southern region, the Alberta Ministry of Justice announced Wednesday.

Jason Cowan is among three new judicial appointments detailed in a release to fill current vacancies on the bench of Alberta Court of Justice.

Two others are connected to the Calgary criminal court and Edmonton civil divisions.

“The experience and qualifications of the individuals named will enhance their respective divisions and the court as a whole in improving access to justice for all Albertans,” stated Court of Justice Chief Justice James Hunter in the release.

Cowan graduated from the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law in 2008 and began working in the Medicine Hat Crown prosecutor’s office in 2012. He became deputy chief Crown prosecutor in 2023 and earlier this month was named acting chief prosecutor for regional prosecutions in the southern judicial region.

His appointment to preside in the southern region as a justice takes effect on Dec. 16.

Other justices appointed this week are Sara L. Bagg, a lawyer and university instructor who has been a full-time justice of the peace since 2017, and Susanne Stushnoff, a former deputy attorney general for Alberta.
