CPKC has completed construction of hydrogen production and fuelling stations at Calgary and Edmonton and will begin refitting diesel locomotives to run on the clean burning fuel, a company release states.

ATCO designed and built the stations, and will now operate them to fuel trains operating between the two major cities in the province.

The railroad has not released timelines or estimates on potential expansion of the carbon-reducing initiative on its network.

“These fuelling facilities are an important part of advancing the ongoing testing of our hydrogen locomotives and advancing the development of our industry-leading program working toward a lower carbon transportation future,” said Kyle Mulligan, CPKC’s assistant vice president of operations technology.

Each facility includes a one-megawatt electrolyzer alongside compression, storage and dispensing systems. In Calgary, the electrolyzer is powered in part by a five-megawatt solar power array at CPKC’s headquarters.

“This advancement marks significant progress in utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source for commercial transportation,” said Mark Brown, an executive vice president with ATCO.
