A new short course will be offered through Medicine Hat College for individuals interested in supporting others in their development of adaptability and coping skills and coaching skills aimed at enhancing mental health.

The program combines direct instruction with practical training and hands-on experience with motivational interviewing techniques, to gain skills in fostering positive recovery outcomes.

The micro-credential course is funded by an undisclosed donation from the Palix Foundation and Our Collective Journey, and will build upon the Brain Story Certification course offered through the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative.

“It bridges the gap between cutting-edge brain science, mental health and addiction knowledge, and the application of these insights in policy and practice,” says Nancy Mannix, chair of the Palix Foundation. “This micro-credential provides practitioners and clients with essential tools establishing a shared knowledge base and language across sectors.”

The course will emphasize the importance of brain development that can lead to strength and adaptability building amongst individuals.

“Resilience, like many other human abilities, is a skill that can be cultivated,” says Ryan Oscar, director of operations and education with Our Collective Journey. “Resilience coach micro-credential prepares professionals, family members and friends to engage in more meaningful conversations with individuals facing addiction and mental health challenges.”

More information can be found in the college’s ‘Extended Learning’ tab on its website.
