asmith@medicinehatnews.com The tale of Ebeneezer Scrooge and his holiday change of heart is returning to Medicine Hat, and with it an opportunity to help children overseas. On the afternoon of Dec. 8, ‘A Christmas Carol’ will return to St John’s Presbyterian Church as a fundraiser for Canadians Reaching Out to the World’s Children, a local charity that supports an orphanage in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Using a script drawn from the original edition, this tapestry of voices will draw attendees into the mystery, the humour and the thought-provoking choices everyone faces when confronted with the reality of human need and the opportunity for generosity. “What better cause to consider with Dickens’ encouragement than the need of hungry young children in one of the world’s poorest countries,” said Dr. Nancy Cocks, President of the CARO Board. CARO has a twenty-year relationship working with the orphanage, helping to meet its annual operating expenses. As a registered charity, they can also offer charitable receipts for donations of $20 or more. The general public is invited to attend and enjoy the performance of the story as well as some festive music, which will take place from 2-4 p.m. at the church. A free will offering will be taken in support of Teega Wende, the orphanage in Burkina Faso which cares for infants and small children, as well as a network of host families who receive older children from the orphanage to provide stable homes and access to education. 8
