A former mixed-martial arts promotor with ties to Medicine Hat has been charged with fraud related to his company’s promise to supply thermal coal.

Thomas Norman David Fiddler, of Lethbridge, faces five charges, including fraud and money laundering related to $3.5 million in investments made in his company, Re-O-Demo.

Officials with the Alberta Securities Commission and the RCMP federal integrated market enforcement team allege that funds were directed to other companies controlled by Fiddler or for his personal use.

Authorities stated on Nov. 4 that the funds from four investors were supposed to be used to process, clean and sell coal.

Fiddler faces four counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count of laundering the proceeds of crime over $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 28 in Calgary.

The Medicine Hat Police Service, Lethbridge Police Service, Regina Police Service, the RCMP and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) assisted in the investigation, according to a release.
