In October, Medicine Hat Fire Service responded to four structure fires and 22 outside fires, as well as 21 motor vehicle collisions. The fire prevention and education team also visited 23 local schools.

One structure fire occurred on Oct. 24 after crews responded to a resident who had brought an outdoor fire into their home and started a fire, prompting a safety message to only use fireplaces and other wood-burning appliances to the intended design they are approved for.

Throughout October, firefighters responded to 61 fire alarms, 46 medical calls and 19 carbon monoxide or gas related calls.

Local fire education ramped up during Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 6-12, as local teams visited 23 local schools highlighting the importance of having a working fire/carbon monoxide alarm installed in homes.

Earlier this year the service increased fire prevention efforts by creating a new job position to expand its public communication and provide recourse to keep the community safe.
