Several charges follow suspect with weapon fleeing from police

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on October 30, 2024.

The Medicine Hat Police Service has laid eight charges following reports of a dispute Monday afternoon.

Police say their patrol section responded to a report of a dispute in the area of Thompson Crescent. Officers received information that a 33-year-old male, allegedly in possession of a firearm, had left the residence in a vehicle with a female acquaintance shortly before police arrived.

The MHPS criminal investigation section worked alongside the patrol unit with the investigation, locating the man in the vehicle later in the day. After an attempted traffic stop, police say the man refused to pull over and they did not pursue due to public safety concerns.

Police then located the vehicle in a remote area on the west side of the city near the river, having been driven off road, through a field and over an embankment on the south side of the river. With HALO assistance, police located and arrested the man who was treated for minor injuries from the collision.

As a result of the investigation, Leonard Beaulieu of Medicine Hat has been charged with:

– Uttering threats,

– Breach of firearms prohibition,

– Possession of a firearm in a vehicle,

– Unauthorized possession of a firearm,

– Unauthorized possession of a weapon,

– Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public,

– Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and

– Flight from a peace officer.

Beaulieu was held for a judicial interim release hearing and remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court today.

A man by the same name, whose age matches up, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years after pleading guilty in the 2016 shooting death of Jordan Pede. Due to time served, he would have been released some time in 2023.

Police would not confirm if this is the same Leonard Beaulieu.
