Sask Party maintains stronghold on ridings in province’s west

Government candidates swept southwest and west-central Saskatchewan ridings with convincing wins in Monday’s general election in that province.

The Saskatchewan Party maintained government with strong showings outside the major cities of Saskatoon and Regina, though results were being finalized Tuesday.

Health Minister Everett Hindley was re-elected in the Swift Current riding with a lead of 4,637 votes to 1,996 for the NDP’s Jay Kimball.

With all 13 polls reporting, Buffalo Party candidate Constance Maffenbeier had 214 votes, and the Green Party’s Geoff Watson 96.

In the riding of Cypress Hills, incumbent Doug Steele of the Saskatchewan Party won re-election with preliminary results showing 5,656 votes for the returning MLA over 1,367 for Clare McNabb of the NDP and 486 for Doug Wilson of the Buffalo Party. Those figures are with all 39 polls reporting.

The riding of Wood River, including Webb, Climax and areas south and east of Swift Current, Sask Party candidate David Marit earned 5,560 to retain the seat. Mike Tapola (NDP) was second with 1,464, Clint Arnason (PC) third with 548, followed by Todd McIntyre (Sask United) 480 and Melvin Pylypchuk (Green) 52.

In west-central Saskatchewan, Sask. Party candidate Kim Gartner won with 5,544 Kindersley-Biggar, placing ahead of Cindy Hoppe of the NDP, 1,148, and Wade Sira (ind.) 282. Darcy Robilliard (Green) had 114 and Jeff Wortman (Buffalo) 102.
