This winter the city’s fleet of snow machines, including 11 sanders and four graders, will all display unique names as Medicine Hat joins a growing list of Canadian cities adopting a warm-hearted initiative to name their plows.

The city announced Friday it will be unveiling a list of finalists from more than 200 submissions, which the public will be able to vote on. The final list of names was narrowed down by the municipal works department.

The Name the Fleet campaign received name submissions up to Oct. 11. Top vote-getting names will be attached to plows while in service this winter.

In 2021, the Hat’s big-city neighbours to the northwest became the first municipality in the country to give names to its fleet of snow plows. Calgary asked its students to submit names for its snow and ice control fleet and now city plows are referred to by names including ‘Plowabunga,’ ‘Snowy McSnow Face’ and ‘The Plowtypus.’
