A French utility developer has applied to build a large solar farm and battery storage system near the town of Fort Macleod.

The “Jumbo Solar with Storage” facility would comprise about 790 acres on parts of 10 quarter-sections of previously cultivated land located one mile southwest of the town.

The site, adjacent to Highway 3, would be capable of producing 198 megawatts in peak conditions and be coupled with a new substation and 75-megawatt battery system capable of providing 150 megawatt hours of power.

Comments from affected parties are now being accepted until Nov. 15.

Neoen Canada is a subsidiary of the French renewable developer which operates in France, Australia, Africa and Europe.

In Canada, it owns and operates the Fox Coulee Solar facility, west of Hanna, which was commissioned this year.
