Managing director of public services Joseph Hutter provided members of the public services committee some brief highlights of projects going on around the city.

Fire Prevention Week

Last week Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services teamed up with the National Fire Protection Association for fire prevention week and were able to deliver presentations about smoke alarms to approximately 5,000 local students.

Fire chief Chad Eakins told the committee local firefighters were able to visit 25 local schools last week and says they have increased educational content and fire prevention through social media.

“I think our folks in our community safety branch did a fantastic job getting out in our community with our fire and life safety educator,” explains Eakins. “If you follow our social media feeds, you’ll certainly see an uptick in the amount of information that we’re providing for the community.”

SEASAR

The local search and rescue group is requesting secure storage space from the city that can be used for its equipment, including its rescue boat, during the winter months.

The South Eastern Alberta Search and Rescue, or SEASAR, has requested city help to store indoors during the winter its four rescue vehicles, shallow draft jet boat and an equipment trailer that is used as a command post.

Coun. Romona Robins says she asked that SEASAR’s request be brought back to committee after it is updated as city staff were looking for a facility to help store their critical vehicles as well and recommended moving the issue to outstanding items for the remainder of the year.

“So the committee will have to circle background, and you can hear the results of the city and make any recommendations or city inquiries from there.”
